Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Emsley L Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Emsley L Faulkner (George W, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in Indiana March 4th 1853, to parents George Washington Faulkner and Harriet Phoebe Smith.

Emsley married Christina E Nehm (1863-1913) March 25th 1880 in Pentwater, Oceana Co, Michigan.

The couple had two children:

  • Victor Faulkner b. 19 Dec 1880/81 d. 1 Sep 1966 m. Mattie Smith no issue
  • Lillian Faulkner b. 15 Feb 1884 d. 1 Sep 1960 m. Fred E Stebbins

Emsley was a farmer in Oceana Co, Michigan. He owned his own farm and appeared quite successful based on the 124 page Probate packet containing the documents necessary to settle his estate.

Emsley L Faulkner died suddenly on August 18th 1890 when a scaffold of grain fell on him, crushing him to death. He left behind his young wife and two small children. He was 37 years old. He is buried in the Pentwater Township Cemetery in Oceana Co, Michigan.

After the death of her husband Christina supported herself and her children first as a dressmaker and then as a laborer in a canning factory.

Christina E Nehm Faulkner died of consumption on March 27th 1913. Her death certificate states that she had been ill for at least two years but did not seek treatment, not believing in it. She was 49 years old. Christina is buried with her husband in the Pentwater Township Cemetery in Oceana Co, Michigan.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | R N Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Rodolphus Nelson Faulkner "RN" (George W, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in
Bariboo, Wisconsin May 14th 1847, to parents George Washington Faulkner and Harriet Phoebe Smith.

RN married Addie Whitcomb (1853-1933) on December 25th 1872 in Pentwater, Oceana Co, Michigan.

The couple had three children:

  • FNU Faulkner b. abt 1873 d. bef 1900
  • Mertie Faulkner b. 10 Apr 1875 d. 22 Oct 1875
  • Raymond W Faulkner  b. 28 May 1877 d. 17 Apr 1961 m. Sadie R O'Neill

Rodolphus, know as "RN" studied business management in Chicago at Bryant and Stratton's Business College. After graduation he returned to his family home in Pentwater, Michigan; his family recently relocating there from Indiana. RN secured a job as a bookkeeper in a local store.

After marriage RN got into the food services/restaurant business, traveling to Los Angeles, CA in the early 1880's to operate a "coffee saloon". He returned to the Midwest in the 1890's running businesses in Chicago. By 1900 he was back in Michigan and employed as a merchants buyer. He seemed to move around a bit, in 1910 he was back living in Chicago and a restaurant caterer, then in 1920 in Michigan again and apparently retired. RN tried living in Los Angeles once again where he registered to vote in 1924.

Rodolphus Nelson Faulkner died in Charlevoix, Michigan on May 20th 1933. He was 86 years old. He is buried in the Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix, MI.

Addie Whitcomb Faulkner died six months later, October 31st 1933, at the age of 80. She is buried in Brookside Cemetery alongside her husband.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Clarence W Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Clarence W Faulkner (George W, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in Indiana March 25th 1842, to parents George Washington Faulkner and Harriet Pheobe Smith.

Clarence married (1) Lovina Lansing (1848-1867) July 3rd 1866 in Chicago, IL (2) Ella A Stebbins (1850-1884) September 14th 1868 in Oceana Co, MI (3) Alice Sullivan (1845-1928) September 12th 1875 in Chicago, IL AND April 11th 1903 in Indiana.

Clarence and Lovina had one child born in Oceana Co, MI:

  • UFN Faulkner b. Oct 1867 d. UNK

Lovina died in childbirth October 6th 1867. It is not know whether the child survived. Lovina is buried in Pentwater Twp Cemetery in Pentwater, Oceana Co, Mi.

After a brief hiatus in Chicago, IL Clarence returned to Pentwater, MI and married for a second time.

Clarence and Ella had one child born in Jefferson Co, CO:

  • Clarence I Faulkner b. 25 Mar 1873 d. UNK m. Lena P Dickerson

Clarence and Ella got divorced shortly after the birth of their son and Clarence returned to Chicago, IL, where he married for a third time. Ella married Clark A Titus in 1882, having two more children with him. Ella died in childbirth Oct 2 1884 and is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Boulder, CO.

Clarence and Alice had one child born Chicago IL:

  • Fred Faulkner b. 19 Jun 1868 d. 22 Sep 1935 never married

Clarence was in the grocery and restaurant business and traveled a lot. I can only speculate, but it is curious that his son Fred was born in 1868 (to his third wife) two months before Clarence married his second wife. Unless Fred is not Clarence's son, this is still a mystery needing to be solved.

Clarence's brother RN Faulkner was attending college in Chicago in 1867 and 1868.

Clarence may not have know about the birth of his son Fred before he married Ella. That marriage was short-lived and Clarence returned to Chicago to marry Fred's mother. The couple remained married, I presume, until Clarence's death March 25th 1926. Alice followed two years later on March 11th 1928. They are buried in the Westville Cemetery in LaPorte Co, IN with their son Fred.

I did find another marriage record for Clarence W Faulkner and Alice Faulkner in 1903 in Indiana ...... I don't know why.
