Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Harriet Walsh {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Harriet Walsh (Mary Ann, Joseph, James, William) was born in Orange Co, New York, in August 1832, to parents Mary Ann Faulkner and Hiram Walsh (Welch).

Harriet married John A Galloway (1829-1907) about 1852, most likely in Orange Co, New York.

Harriet and John had three children: (according to the 1900 U S Census)

  • William Augustus Galloway b. May 1853 d. 30 Apr 1909 m. Ada M LNU
  • Bartlett R Galloway b. abt 1856 d. 12 Mar 1905 never married
  • FNU Galloway b. UNK d. bef 1900

Not much is know of this family. Nothing is known of Harriet, unfortunately. John was a dairy farmer in Richmond Co, New York. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862, was listed as "deserted but caught" and mustered out in 1865.

John Galloway died December 24th 1907 in Richmond Co, New York. He is buried in the Moravain Cemetery on Staten Island. He was 78 years old.

Harriet Walsh Galloway died January 4th 1908. She is buried with her husband in the Moravain Cemetery. She was 75 years old.

Tools For The Dig: State Focused Research | Ohio

State Focused Research | Ohio

Some of my favorite research sites are slightly off-radar by today's definition.

First I'd like to talk about Genealogy Trails. From their homepage: "Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers. We are all about adding data for you to use in researching your family lines!!! We know that what you're looking for is data -- and we have LOTS of it right here.
Our hosts work continuously to bring you fresh, interesting and NEW data (well.... as new as hundred year old data can be!!!)" Pretty much everything you need to know to begin your Ohio research is contained within the pages of  Ohio Genealogy Trails. This is a thorough, well thought out site - and they are always looking for volunteers!

Companion Yahoo! Group: Genealogy Trails/MidwesternStates

Next up, RAOGK. Another volunteer site. A treasure trove of links, well organized and easy to understand. From this site you can request look-ups from a team of Ohio volunteers. Or add you name to the volunteer list if Ohio is your home-base.

OHGenWeb is an oldie but a goody! Volunteer based also, this database was founded in 1996! From their home page: "OHGenWeb isn’t an ordinary genealogy website. Ordinary websites are those where text and sometimes pretty pictures are present, but trying to get in touch with a real person to help you with your research… impossible. The strength of OHGenWeb is its many volunteers, some of whom have spent over a decade assisting others with their Ohio research. Using our county page visit the Ohio county your ancestors lived in and first try and find any information the county may freely provide on their pages (most have some sort of search built in). If the particular fact isn’t available online, then reach out to the county coordinator (cc) and they will try and assist you as best they can. Most county coordinators have their email address available on their website, though some will use contact forms."

Linkpendium is another all around resource hub. So What is Linkpendium, Anyway? "Linkpendium is a 10,000,000+ resource directory to everything on the Web about families worldwide and genealogically-relevant information about U.S. states and counties. We cover both free and subscription sites, with a strong emphasis upon free resources provided by libraries, other government agencies, genealogical and historical societies, and individuals. We are particularly proud of our unique indexes to online biographies."

Cyndi's List Ohio page.

FamilySearch:
Ohio State Wiki
Ohio State Catalog
Ohio Online Genealogy Records

State societies and archives include:
Ohio Genealogical Society
Ohio History Center
Digital State Archives/Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio is home to the Western Reserve Historical Society Research Library

A comprehensive list of newspapers can be found at The Ancestor Hunt's Ohio page.

For social context look at LOC Ohio Collection and the DPLA Ohio Hub.

As I discover more resources I'll update this post. Do you have any Ohio favorites that I've missed? Please share!

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Sarah Ann Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Sarah Ann Faulkner (Thomas E, Joseph, James, William) was born in Orange Co, New York, about 1829, to parents Thomas E Faulkner and Susan Van Voorhis (Voorhees).

Sarah married (1) Isaac McCord (1819-1866) about 1850 most likely in Orange Co, New York. Sarah married (2) Charles Manson (1828-UNK) November 18th 1875 in Manhattan, New York.

Sarah and Isaac had at least five children:

  • Susan Adelia McCord b. Jan 1852 d. 3 Apr 1852
  • William N McCord b. abt 1853 d. UNK
  • James I McCord b. abt 1855 d. UNK m. Susan F Brinkerhoff
  • John McCord b. abt 1861 d. UNK
  • George McCord b. abt 1864 d. UNK

Not much is known about Sarah Ann Faulkner or Isaac McCord. The records are few and far between, and some are confusing. Isaac McCord was a tavern and hotel owner in Montgomery, Orange Co, New York. Isaac died December 3rd 1866 at the age of 47. He is buried in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church cemetery.

It appears that Sarah remained a widow for some time, however there is one curious entry in the Presbyterian Church records of Hamptonburgh, Orange Co, New York. On January 22nd 1867 a Sarah A McCord married a Henry McCarter. I can find no further information on this and (of course) the image of that record is the only one in the record set that is not viewable! (Record found on Ancestry.com with paid subscription)

In 1870 it appears that Sarah McCord was living in New York City with her sons James and John, and her mother Susan.

On November 18th 1875 Sarah A McCord married Charles Manson in Manhattan, New York. The record indexes on Family Search indicate that this is our Sarah as they list parent's names of both the bride and groom.

Sarah and Charles are (first and) last found on the 1880 US Census living in New York City with sons John and George McCord.

Sarah Faulkner McCord Manson died February 25th 1907. She was listed as a widow. The death index says she is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Manhattan, New York.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact me.

Brick Wall Ancestor | #9 Martha McBride {Genealogy}

We all have them! Those stubborn ancestors that refuse to come out of hiding. No matter how much coaxing we do! Well, I think it's time to bring them out of the shadows - put their redacted story out there - another piece of the puzzle could be lurking just around the (cyber) corner, in someone's basement, or closet, or sitting in a box on a bookshelf ......
