Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | James William Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

James William Faulkner (Samuel, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in Wayne Co, New York December 18th 1853, to parents Samuel Faulkner and Elizabeth Ann Lyons.

James married Hannah Louisa Smith (1857-1963) November 1st 1877 in Decatur Co, Indiana.

James and Hannah had at least 5 children: all born Decatur Co, Indiana

James William (known as William) and his family removed to Decatur Co, Indiana from their home in Wayne Co, New York shortly after the deaths of William's brother, father and brother-in-law in several battles of the Civil War. William was about 12 years old at the time. His grandparents had removed to Indiana 15 years earlier.

William was a house builder/carpenter by trade.

James William Faulkner died December 3rd 1930 in Decatur Co, IN and is buried in the South Park Cemetery. William was 76 years old.

Hannah Louisa Smith Faulkner died March 6th 1963 and is buried in the Westport Cemetery in Decatur Co, IN. Hannah was 105 years old.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Eliza A Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Eliza A Faulkner (Samuel, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in Wayne Co, New York June 21st 1845, to parents Samuel Faulkner and Elizabeth Ann Lyons.

Eliza married (1) William Shepherdson (1825-1906) about 1864 most likely in Wayne Co, New York, but possibly in Decatur Co, Indiana. She married (2) Ezra Nay (1842-1914) February 14th 1909 in Marion, Indiana.

Eliza and William had at least four children: all born in Decatur Co, Indiana

• Mary Shepherdson b. 28 Jul 1865 d. 24 Apr 1946 m. Z Taylor Stephens no issue
• Emanuel Shepherdson b. 31 Aug 1867 d. 15 Nov 1916 m. Rhoda A Speece
• Frank Shepherdson b. 6 Nov 1872 d. 17 Aug 1911 m. (1) Cora Biddle (2) Jessie R Madison
• Leonard Shepherdson b. 23 Jan 1880 d. 22 Aug 1908 never married

Eliza and her family removed to Decatur Co, Indiana from their home in Wayne Co, New York shortly after the deaths of Eliza's brother, father and brother-in-law in several battles of the Civil War. Her grandparents had removed to Indiana 15 years earlier.

Eliza may have met William in Indiana or she may have know him from New York, regardless the children were all born in Decatur Co, Indiana where the couple made their home.

William was twenty years Eliza's senior. He was a house carpenter by trade. By 1900 the couple had divorced. William Shepherdson died April 4th 1906 and is buried in South Park Cemetery in Decatur Co, Indiana.

Eliza remarried in 1909 Ezra Nay and the couple lived in Edgar Co, Illinois until Ezra's death in 1914.

Eliza returned to Indiana and was living with her daughter Mary Stephens at the time of her death. Eliza A Faulkner Shepherdson Nay died on November 6th 1921 and is buried in the South Park Cemetery in Decatur Co, Indiana.

Eliza's death certificate lists William Faulkner as her father, the informant was her daughter Mary who was born after her grandfather died. The correct given name of Eliza's father is Samuel.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Hannah A Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Hannah A Faulkner (Samuel, Robert, Samuel, William) was born in Wayne Co, New York about 1837, to parents Samuel Faulkner and Elizabeth Ann Lyons.

Hannah married William M Hawkins (1823-1864) December 26th 1856 in Wayne Co, New York.

The couple had at least three children: all born Wayne Co, New York

• Lucy Ann Elizabeth Hawkins b. 25 Sep 1857 d. UNK m. James F Shepherd MD
• Samuel Hawkins b. 12 Jan 1860 d. aft 1918 m. (1) Hattie V Simpson (2) Josephine Newbaur
• Hannah Eliza Hawkins b.  28 Mar 1862 d. aft 1940 m. (1) Herman Kruse (2) Frederick Gottschalk

William M Hawkins was an English immigrant, it is unclear how long he had been in the United States before marrying Hannah. On December 26th 1863 William left his young family and mustered in with Company G in the Union Army, Civil War. William was killed the following fall at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Shenandoah, VA, October 19th 1864. William is buried in the Winchester National Cemetery, Winchester City, Virginia. 

Hannah and the children never saw him again. 

Of note, Hannah lost her father the same day in the same battle.

Hannah and the children removed to  Decatur Co, Indiana with the remainder of Hannah's family shortly after the war ended.

Tragedy struck again on June 13th 1868 when, as a result of a fall, Hannah lost her life. It is unknown where Hannah was laid to rest. Hannah A Faulkner Hawkins was just 31 years old. 

The children resided with Hannah's sister and her husband in Decatur Co, Indiana until the age of emancipation.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Adaline Crawford {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Adaline Crawford (Letty Crawford, Mary, Samuel, William) was born in Orange Co, New York March 13th 1845, to parents Letty Crawford and James I Crawford.

Adaline married Rev. Benjamin Gilbert Benedict (1839-1912) December 26th 1877 in the home of her mother Letty, in Crawford, Orange Co, New York.


The couple had at least two children:

• Benjamin Crawford Benedict b. 16 Aug 1879 d. 18 Jan 1955 m. (1)Emma Richards (2) Elizabeth MacMaster
• Mabel Gertrude Crawford b. 14 Aug 1884 d. 26 Apr 1885 

Benjamin was a young widower when he married Adaline. He had been educated as a school teacher and went on to become a minister in the Presbyterian church, first in Thompson Ridge, Orange Co, New York then Washingtonville, Orange Co, New York. After the death of Benjamin's first wife he returned to teaching business English at the Long Island Business College. 

Adaline and Benjamin were married in the home of Letty Crawford, Adaline's mother, in Crawford, Orange Co, New York. The newlyweds removed to Kings Co, New York where Benjamin continued to teach.

Adaline Crawford Benedict died February 22nd 1899 at the age of 53. She is buried in the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

Rev Benjamin Gilbert Benedict lived another 13 years. He died on December 9th 1912. He was 73 years old. Benjamin is buried with his wife in the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | John Erskine Crawford {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

John Erskine Crawford (James Crawford, Mary, Samuel, William) was born in Orange Co, New York January 4th 1841, to parents James H Crawford and Catherine W Bull.

John married Sarah Bull Thompson (1846-1925) about 1865 most likely in Orange Co, New York.

The couple had at least six children:

• Catherine B Crawford b. 25 Oct 1868 d. 1 Nov 1942 m. Rev. Wm. Towe
• Isabelle T Crawford b. 13 Jun 1869 d. 6 Mar 1914 m. Loomis C Oakley
• Sarah F Crawford b. abt 1873 d. UNK
• Harriet Crawford b. 15 Feb 1874 d. 1 Oct 1961 m. Whitford W Woodley
• James Harvey Crawford b. 3 Feb 1876 d. 30 Aug 1919 m. Rose Lathrop

John Erskine was a farmer in Crawford, Orange Co, New York. On December 5th 1885 he and his wife sold the farm to George W Dickerson for $8,300.00 and headed to North Carolina.

John Erskine Crawford died in Pasquotank Co, North Carolina on August 17th 1888, just three years after leaving New York. He was 47 years old. He is buried in Old Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Sarah Bull Thompson Crawford did not remarry. She resided in the household of her daughter Harriet until her death, April 29th 1925. She is buried with her husband and several of her children in the Old Hollywood Cemetery.
