It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.
Priscilla Faulkner (John, Wm Bull, James, William) was born in Orange Co, New York about 1806, to parents John Faulkner and Catherine McCord.
Priscilla married Benjamin McGowan (b. abt 1804 d. 1890) about 1823 in Orange Co or Ulster Co, New York.
The couple had at least eight children: (most likely all born Crawford, Orange Co, New York)
- Sarah Jane McGowan b. 21 Oct 1823 d. 13 Apr 1895 m. James Van Keuren
- James T McGowan b. abt 1829 d. 21 Mar 1864
- Samuel N McGowan b. abt 1831 d. 26 Jul 1856
- Mary Eliza McGowan b. 6 Apr 1836 d. 1911 m. Johannes L Deyo
- Albert H McGowan b. 30 Oct 1838 d. aft 1900
- Anna Catherine McGowan b. 24 May 1841 d. aft 1924 m. Alzamora Woolsey
- Angelina McGowan b. abt 1843 d. 13 Nov 1862
- Arminda Emily McGowan b. 20 Nov 1845 d. 6 Jan 1926 m. Joel Whitten no issue
Priscilla and Benjamin first resided in Crawford, Orange Co, New York where it is presumed all their children were born. The family removed to Shawangunk, Ulster Co, New York before 1850 as they appear on the 1850 US census and the 1855 New York State census in that town. By 1860 the couple had split up, both continuing to reside in Shawangunk, living in separate residences. Benjamin lived alone while Priscilla remained with one or several of her children until her death.
Priscilla Faulkner McGowan died January 9th 1880 and is buried in the New Prospect Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery in Pine Bush, Ulster Co, New York. Her estranged husband Benjamin McGowan died ten year later, on November 22nd 1890, and is buried with Priscilla and six of their children in the same cemetery.
