Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Frederick J Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Frederick Jackson Faulkner (Nelson, John M, Samuel, William) was born in Tioga Co, New York, April 13th 1879, to parents Nelson Faulkner and Martha Shaw.

Frederick married Claire Edith Hanna (1880-1952) December 28th 1909 in Lock Haven, Clinton Co, Pennsylvania.

The couple had at least three children:

• Louise Viola Faulkner b. 29 Jan 1911 d. 12 Dec 2001 never married
• Madelyn M Faulkner b. 17 May 1913 d. Jul 1973 m. George C Shaffer no issue
• Freda Claire Faulkner b.  2 Apr 1920 d. 2001 never married

Frederick was born in Tioga Co, New York and moved with his family to Pennsylvania when he was one year old. 

Fred worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad his entire life. He had an 8th grade education. He was drafted in both WWI and WWII but I am unsure whether he saw combat. 

The couple made their home in Clinton Co, PA, first in Renovo and later in Lock Haven.

Claire Edith Hanna Faulkner, a diabetic, died February 23rd 1952 at the age of 71. She is buried in Flemington Cemetery in Flemington, Clinton Co, PA.

Frederick J Faulkner died March 11th 1956 of Pancreatic Cancer. He was 76 years old. Fred is buried in Flemington Cemetery alongside his wife.

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Myrtle V Faulkner (Nelson, John M, Samuel, William) was born in Tioga Center, Tioga Co, New York, May 29th 1877, to parents Nelson Faulkner and Martha Shaw.

Myrtle married Daniel W Knarr (1873-1945) on March 4th 1895 in Clinton Co, Pennsylvania.

The couple had nine children:

Myrtle was born in Tioga County, New York and moved with her family to Clearfield Co, Pennsylvania when she was 3 years old.

Myrtle was a housewife and mother, her husband Daniel worked for the railroad in various capacities his whole life. The family lived mostly in Clinton Co, PA but moved for a brief time around 1910 to Westmoreland Co, PA.

The family was of the Methodist faith.

Myrtle V Faulkner Knarr died September 29th 1923 of Lethargic Encephalitis. She was 46 years old.  She is buried in Flemington Cemetery in Flemington, PA.

Daniel W Knarr died October 20th 1945 of Pneumonia. He was 72 years old. He is buried alongside his wife in Flemington Cemetery.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Nelson Faulkner {Gen 3}

Nelson Faulkner (John M, Samuel, William) was born in Tioga Co, New York, about 1839, to parents John M Faulkner and his second wife Catherine LNU.

Nelson married Martha Shaw in 1872 according to the 1900 federal census, most likely in Tioga Co, New York.

The couple had at least two children:

• Myrtle V Faulkner b. 29 May 1877 d. 29 Sep 1923 m. Daniel W Knarr
• Frederick Jackson Faulkner b. 13 Apr 1880 d. 11 Mar 1956 m. Claire Edith Hanna

Nelson Faulkner, as is the case with most Faulkners,  is a bit confusing. There are a great deal of conflicting documents available. What I recorded  here is what I have learned.

Nelson Faulkner was born in Tioga Co, New York and lived the first half of his life there. He removed to Clearfield Co, Pennsylvania in 1880 and later moved to Clinton Co, PA.  He was listed on the 1863 Civil War draft registration records for Tioga Co, New York, being recorded as a 'person of class I subject to do military duty in the 26th congressional district state of New York'. I have not found any record of him actually serving.

Nelson died July 13th 1909 of a laudanum overdose at his home in Clinton Co, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Flemington Cemetery in Clinton Co, PA.  Martha Shaw Faulkner died November 6th 1915 of typhoid fever and is buried next to her husband Nelson.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Isabella Faulkner {Gen 3}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Isabella Faulkner (John M, Samuel, William) was born in Tioga Co, New York, about 1830, to parents John M Faulkner and his second wife Catherine LNU.

Isabella married Jobe V Vandemark about 1852, most likely in Tioga Co, New York.

The couple had at least two children:

• Mary Ellen Vandemark b. about 1853
• Catherine Vandemark b. about 1857

Isabella was the second child and only daughter born to Catherine Faulkner, John M Faulkner's second wife. She joined a family that would eventually consist of ten half-siblings and four full-sibling brothers.

There is very little I have found regarding this family. The entire family is last listed on the 1875 New York State census. 

All of their deaths are unknown.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Ruth A Faulkner {Gen 3}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Ruth A Faulkner (John M, Samuel, William) was born in Wallkill, Orange Co, New York, April 30th 1821, to parents John M Faulkner and UNK Wife 1.

Ruth married Ichabod A Ford about 1843, most likely in Tioga Co, New York.

The couple had at least two children:

• Jane E Ford b. abt 1844 d. UNK
• Myrtle Ford b. abt 1857 d. April 1883 m. William Billings

Born in Wallkill, Orange Co, New York, Ruth was the youngest of ten children born to John M and his first wife. Her mother may well have died in childbirth, or from resulting complications. Her father soon remarried and the new family moved to Tioga Co, where John M and his second wife, Catherine, added to the large family with 5 more children. 

Ruth met and married farmer Ichabod Ford and the couple settled in to raise their own family. There may well have been more than just the two known daughters born to them. Based on the large span of time between the birth of Jane and the birth of Myrtle there could have been 5 or 6 more children born into the family.

Ruth A Faulkner Ford died October 11th 1899. Her husband Ichabod died November 30th 1903. Both are buried in Hope Cemetery in Newark Valley, Tioga Co, New York. Their daughter Myrtle is buried there as well.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | John M Faulkner {Gen 2}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

John M Faulkner (Samuel, William) youngest son of Samuel and Elinor. And yet another mystery produced by the Samuel Faulkner family. John M is listed in an 1839 family land sale document as residing in Tioga County, NY. He is listed in that same document as having a wife named Catherine. John M is found in the Wallkill, NY census in the years 1810 and 1820. He goes missing in 1830 and reappears in 1840 in Tioga Co, NY. Based on the census records, and my best guess, John M most likely had a wife prior to Catherine. He may have had as many as 15 children! Ten with wife #1 and 5 with Catherine. Now, we know that the census records prior to 1850 are sad and frustrating, listing only the heads of household and number of household occupants. Some of the presumed children could be other young relatives and not children of John's at all. By 1850 we discover the names of the children still living at home - so there's something.

Other hints as to names of children come from others found buried alongside John. Still so much to learn and prove, I present here my hypothesis and nothing more. If any of this rings true with you, please contact me! I'd love to collaborate and get to the bottom of this mystery.

John M Faulkner (Samuel, William) was born about 1782 in Wallkill, then Ulster Co, New York, to Samuel Faulkner and his wife Elinor.

Based on the limited information I have been able to gather here is what I propose:


John married Wife 1 about 1803 and had the following children, all born in Wallkill, NY:

• Female 1 Faulkner b. about 1804
• Male 1 Faulkner born about 1806
• Female 2 Faulkner born about 1808
• Amanda Faulkner born 1811 died 1882 
• Female 3 Faulkner born about 1813
• Male 2 Faulkner born about 1815
• Betsey Faulkner born 1816 died 1878
• Male 3 Faulkner born about 1818
• Female 4 Faulkner born about 1819
• Ruth Faulkner born 1821 died 1899 married Ichabod Ford

I suspect Wife 1 died sometime between 1821 and 1824.


John married Catherine LNU about 1825 and had the following children, all born in Tioga Co, NY:

• Samuel Faulkner born 1826 died 1859
• Isabella Faulkner born 1830 married Jobe Vandemark
• Adam Faulkner born 1832
• Andrew Jackson Faulkner born 1836 died 1871 married Elizabeth LNU 
• Nelson Faulkner born about 1839 died 1909 married Martha Shaw

John M Faulkner died November 18, 1861 in Tioga Co, NY and is buried in Hope Cemetery. John is buried near Amanda & Betsey Faulkner and Ruth Faulkner Ford.
