Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Esther M Lipsett {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Esther M Lipsett (Mary Ann Morrison, Esther, William, William) was born in Orange Co, New York, December 29th 1831, to parents Mary Ann Morrison and Robert Lipsett.

Esther married James Vessey (1801-1894) about 1865 most likely in Orange Co, New York.

The couple has at least one child:

• Robert Russell Vessey b. 21 Jan 1866 d. 8 Mar 1943 m. Harriet L Smeaton

This was a second marriage for James Vessey. He was about 65 when the couple married. James was born in England about 1801 and became naturalized on 4 Oct 1856 at the Court of Common Pleas, New York County. A man named James Russell of Brooklyn, NY was the witness. James' first wife, Mary Ann, died in November 1857. James had three daughters with his first wife, all grown by the time he started his second family.

James was a druggist by profession, Esther kept house. The family lived in New York City.

Esther M Lipsett Vessey died December 8th 1893 and is buried in the Goodwill Presbeterian Churchyard in Montgomery, Orange Co, New York.

James Vessey died the following year, at the age of 93, while residing in the Home for Old Men and Aged Couples. He is buried in St Michael's Cemetery in Queens, New York.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Sarah Ann Faulkner {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Sarah Ann Faulkner (Thomas E, Joseph, James, William) was born in Orange Co, New York, about 1829, to parents Thomas E Faulkner and Susan Van Voorhis (Voorhees).

Sarah married (1) Isaac McCord (1819-1866) about 1850 most likely in Orange Co, New York. Sarah married (2) Charles Manson (1828-UNK) November 18th 1875 in Manhattan, New York.


Sarah and Isaac had at least five children:

• Susan Adelia McCord b. Jan 1852 d. 3 Apr 1852
• William N McCord b. abt 1853 d. UNK
• James I McCord b. abt 1855 d. UNK m. Susan F Brinkerhoff
• John McCord b. abt 1861 d. UNK
• George McCord b. abt 1864 d. UNK

Not much is known about Sarah Ann Faulkner or Isaac McCord. The records are few and far between, and some are confusing. Isaac McCord was a tavern and hotel owner in Montgomery, Orange Co, New York. Isaac died December 3rd 1866 at the age of 47. He is buried in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church cemetery.

It appears that Sarah remained a widow for some time, however there is one curious entry in the Presbyterian Church records of Hamptonburgh, Orange Co, New York. On January 22nd 1867 a Sarah A McCord married a Henry McCarter. I can find no further information on this and (of course) the image of that record is the only one in the record set that is not viewable! (Record found on Ancestry.com with paid subscription)

In 1870 it appears that Sarah McCord was living in New York City with her sons James and John, and her mother Susan.

On November 18th 1875 Sarah A McCord married Charles Manson in Manhattan, New York. The record indexes on Family Search indicate that this is our Sarah as they list parent's names of both the bride and groom.

Sarah and Charles are (first and) last found on the 1880 US Census living in New York City with sons John and George McCord.

Sarah Faulkner McCord Manson died February 25th 1907. She was listed as a widow. The death index says she is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Manhattan, New York.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Nelson Townsend Houston Sr {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Nelson Townsend Houston Sr (Nelson Houston, Sarah, James, William) was born in Cornwall, Orange Co, New York, August 3rd 1849, to parents Nelson Houston and Sarah Townsend.

Nelson married (1) Katherine A Hines (1852-UNK) February 23rd 1871 in Washington DC. Nelson married (2) Mary Teresa Bowers (1870-UNK)  May 10th 1900 in Manhattan, New York.

Nelson and Katherine had at least two children: born San Francisco, CA

• Nelson Townsend Houston Jr b. 6 Sep 1875 d. 1944 never married
• Christine R Houston b. 25 Jul 1877 d. 31 May 1948 m. Walter D Braddock

Another difficult family group. Nelson was a Lieutenant in the US Navy. A lifer. He enlisted on July 28th 1865 and had served in the Spanish-American War, seeing combat in Mariel, Cuba 5 July 1898. Born in Cornwall, New York, married in Washington DC, Nelson and his new wife Katherine headed to California and settled near San Francisco. He was listed as Lt USN on the 1880 census.

It is unclear where Nelson and family resided between 1880 and 1900. By 1900 Nelson was back in New York City, marrying for the second time on May 10th 1900. Daughter Christine is also in NYC at this time, marrying on Staten Island November 19th 1900.

There are no further records to be found (at this time) for Katherine Hines Houston. Were Nelson and Katherine divorced? Did Katherine die? If so, where?

I do not know if Nelson and his second wife Mary had any children. She was 21 years his junior, it is quite possible the couple had children together. That said, Nelson's will lists only Mary as the heir to his estate. No mention of children. By either wife.

Nelson Townsend Houston Sr died March 11th 1913 and is buried in the Friends Cemetery in Cornwall, Orange Co, New York. The FAG memorial has his death date incorrect, however the tombstone is correct.

No further information has been found on the whereabouts of Mary Teresa Bowers Houston.

Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | Mary Corwin {Gen 4}

It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.

Mary Corwin (Catherine Houston, Sarah, James, William) was born in Middletown, Orange Co, New York, August 26th 1833, to parents Catherine Houston and David Corwin.

Mary married John Davis Wilcox (abt 1820-UNK) about 1852, perhaps in Rockland Co, New York.


The couple had at least two children:

• William H Wilcox b. 9 May 1853 d. 1907 m. Mildred Jennie Johnston
• Henry Houston Wilcox b. abt 1859 d. UNK

Not much is known about this family. The original information was taken from the Bull/Wells Genealogy book. Further research turned up very little additional information. John and Mary are found on the 1860 US Census living in New York City with two more boys, Nelson A Wilcox and John W Wilcox. The boys are too old to be sons of Mary, perhaps John Wilcox was a widower when Mary married him? There is also a 26 year old man named Henry Houston living in the household.

This is the only census the family appears on. I found John in the NY City Directories up to 1864, then he was gone.

The death date and burial location are unknown for both Mary Corwin Wilcox and her husband John D Wilcox.
