Finding Faulkner: The Progeny | John Erskine Crawford {Gen 4}


It started, as good quests always do, with a family tale.


John Erskine Crawford (James Crawford, Mary, Samuel, William) was born in Orange Co, New York January 4th 1841, to parents James H Crawford and Catherine W Bull.

John married Sarah Bull Thompson (1846-1925) about 1865 most likely in Orange Co, New York.

The couple had at least six children:

  • Mary A Crawford b. 14 Oct 1865 d. 14 Oct 1886 never married
  • Catherine B Crawford b. 25 Oct 1868 d. 1 Nov 1942 m. Rev. Wm. Towe
  • Isabelle T Crawford b. 13 Jun 1869 d. 6 Mar 1914 m. Loomis C Oakley
  • Sarah F Crawford b. abt 1873 d. UNK
  • Harriet Crawford b. 15 Feb 1874 d. 1 Oct 1961 m. Whitford W Woodley
  • James Harvey Crawford b. 3 Feb 1876 d. 30 Aug 1919 m. Rose Lathrop

John Erskine was a farmer in Crawford, Orange Co, New York. On December 5th 1885 he and his wife sold the farm to George W Dickerson for $8,300.00 and headed to North Carolina.

John Erskine Crawford died in Pasquotank Co, North Carolina on August 17th 1888, just three years after leaving New York. He was 47 years old. He is buried in Old Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Sarah Bull Thompson Crawford did not remarry. She resided in the household of her daughter Harriet until her death, April 29th 1925. She is buried with her husband and several of her children in the Old Hollywood Cemetery.
